We illustrate bounds on and approximations to the capacity of the pulse-position-modulated (PPM) Poisson channel.  The bounds are used to develop some simple rules of thumb illustrating trade-offs in link design for a optical communications link.  A methodology to select near-optimum, practically implementable coding and modulation parameters under peak power, average power and bandwidth constraints is provided.
