Tone injection is an effective technique for mitigating the high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem in OFDM transmissions. This work explores the connections between tone injection for PAPR reduction and sparse signal reconstruction. ÊSparse tone injection solutions, in terms of the number of subcarriers on which non-zero signals are added, are favorable because they lead to lower average transmission power. ÊPrevious work indicated that even when sparsity of the tone injection solution is ignored, good solutions tend to be sparse. ÊNumerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of noisy basis pursuit-inspired PAPR reduction and characterize the operating circumstances under which the method is effective.
