Mobile multimedia traffic is aggressively exploding in the next couple of years, posing significant challenges to wireless network protocol design. The primary objective of this work is to design lower layer data-centric wireless relay methodology to energy efficiently transmit higher layer multimedia traffic. In order to achieve this objective, we jointly explored higher layer multimedia content diversity and the lower layer communication spatial diversity. The multimedia distortion characteristics and the position value difference at the application layer, the relay forwarding diversity at the network layer, the packet ARQ at the medium access layer, and spatial diversity with transmission power control at the physical layer are jointly optimized to provide multimedia QoE with energy efficiency.
