This talk will present new filter-bank multi-carrier (FBMC) receivers targeted at short prototype filters (PFs). The use of a short PF allows to transmit short radio frames with good spectral efficiency while retaining the advantages of FBMC modulation such as improved frequency containment and support of relaxed synchronization. The proposed receivers enable accurate one-tap equalization of the signal despite the use of a short PF, while having a reduced complexity thanks to the merging of the equalization and of the standard FBMC receiver. We show that the resulting receiver complexity is about half that of the typical long-PF frequency-spread FBMC receiver. An adapted frame structure is also proposed that occupies the same radio resources as a 4G/LTE orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) frame while providing a similar data rate. Simulation results show that the proposed FBMC receivers can outperform an OFDM system on 4G/LTE channel models while exhibiting a much better robustness to synchronization errors.
