Shifting hardware and processing operations from an energy constrained wireless device to the wired infrastructure substantially reduces the power requirements at the wireless device.  Analog backscatter allows the analog to digital conversion operation to be shifted to the wired infrastructure.  Interactive compression is another technique that energy-asymmetric sensing systems can use to further reduce power.
